Privacy ยท what we store and why
Privacy
We store what members give us and what they do here, use it to run the site, and never sell it.
Last updated
The short version
- Reading the site needs no account and sets no cookies.
- Analytics are cookie-free and count visits in aggregate, not people.
- The only cookies are the ones that keep you signed in.
- We use email addresses for The Boot Log and the notifications you turn on, nothing else, and never sell them.
- You can delete your account, and we remove your personal data.
If you only read the site
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without building a profile of you. Like any web server, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver pages and block attacks; we do not store it with anything you do here.
The theme you pick (light, dark or system) is saved in your own browser's local storage. It never leaves your device.
Videos and social posts (YouTube, X, Bluesky) load from those platforms only after you click them, so they cannot track you until you choose to play one.
If you sign in
You sign in with GitHub. We store:
- from GitHub: your name, username, profile picture and email address;
- what you add: your bio and links;
- what you do here: votes, saves, comments, submissions and posts.
Your profile, published submissions, posts and comments are public. Your saves, votes and email address are not. Sign-in uses a cookie that holds your session; it is removed when you sign out.
The Boot Log and other email
Signups for The Boot Log are not open yet. When they are, we use your address to send the weekly issue and nothing else. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Members get notification emails only for the types they turn on.
Our email service can count opens and link clicks. We look at those counts in aggregate, for example in a sponsor's end-of-week report, never per person.
Services we use
- Cloudflare
- Hosting, the database, file storage, spam protection and analytics.
- GitHub
- Sign-in.
- Resend
- Sending The Boot Log and notifications, once email opens.
- Stripe
- Sponsor payments, once online checkout opens. We never see card numbers.
Seeing and deleting your data
You will be able to delete your account from your settings page. When you do, we remove your personal data and show your published contributions as "former member". Until that page is live, or for any other request about your data, email takedown@boardsandbots.com.
Changes
If we change how we use your data, we update this page and the date at the top. We will announce big changes on the site before they apply.
