OpenBaud: serial devices as audited, replayable tools for coding agents

OpenBaud connects Codex to local serial devices through an MCP server and plugin, with every write audited. It identifies ports from USB metadata, checks framing and checksums, and asks for acknowledgment before dangerous commands. Each byte goes to a capture that replays without hardware. The demo GIF and 46-second video show it on an ESP32-S3.

Briefing

Commands marked risk: danger need an acknowledgment, and requires preconditions are checked before any byte goes out. Once a behavior is verified, OpenBaud records it as a typed YAML command or workflow with its provenance. Responses are framed and checksummed; the demo uses CRC-16. Every received and sent byte lands in a .obcap capture file.

The demo board speaks OBP/1, a new binary protocol. Its radar scene comes from test firmware (simulated_scene: 1), so the transport and captures are from the board but the radar data is generated. Codex is the only client the README names. The project is MIT licensed, and the macOS builds are not notarized.
