FreeOCD: a CMSIS-DAP flasher and RTT debugger for VS Code with an MCP server

FreeOCD flashes, verifies, recovers and soft-resets microcontrollers from VS Code through a CMSIS-DAP probe, and opens a two-way SEGGER RTT terminal. The extension registers the same actions as MCP tools for Copilot and other MCP clients. The README lists the Nordic nRF54L15 as the only built-in target; other chips need a target definition file.

Briefing

FreeOCD talks to the probe as a plain HID device over CMSIS-DAP v1, through node-hid and a bundled copy of DAP.js, so Windows needs no WinUSB driver. Flash, verify and recover can be chained from tasks.json, and a selected .hex file can flash on every save. In VS Code 1.101+ and Windsurf Next the MCP server registers itself; a setup command writes the config for Windsurf, Cursor and Cline.

A new chip needs a target JSON file checked against a Zod schema, written by hand or through MCP prompts such as create_target_from_datasheet. The extension ships as 7 platform builds under BSD-3-Clause. The README says its MCP tools run in an isolated subprocess and that it makes no external network requests.
