Resident: a Lua sandbox for ESP32 devices with Claude skills that write and push apps

Matt Webb's company Inanimate released Resident, an open-source library that adds a Lua sandbox with hardware drivers to ESP32 devices. Apps arrive over Wi-Fi and hot-load without reflashing. Bundled Claude skills create, validate and push apps to a device such as the M5StickS3. Webb writes that sandboxed apps get buttons and screens but not the network stack.

Briefing

After Wi-Fi setup, a device receives each app as JSON through a WebSocket relay and loads it in place. An app's on_tick runs at 10 FPS, and the app reaches only the capabilities a driver grants it. Webb writes that an agent, at about 150 ms per reply, is too slow to sit in the event loop. The agent skills ship as a plugin under tools/agent-plugin/.

The post calls Resident alpha, at v0.5.0, and it is MIT-licensed. The repo's examples target the M5StickC Plus2 and an Adafruit ESP32-S2 TFT Feather. The Resident site runs an M5Stick simulator in the browser.

“Every device needs to be able to run user code, that's the answer.”
