Espressif on Code with Claude: Cardputers, Claude Code and Desktop Buddy

Espressif published a recap on 14 May of ESP32 projects from Anthropic's Code with Claude event, where each attendee got an ESP32-S3 M5Stack Cardputer. Attendees described a program in plain language, and Claude Code wrote and flashed it. The post also covers Claude Desktop Buddy, a BLE reference design on the M5StickC Plus, and Espressif's own ESP Desktop Buddy library.

Briefing

The post builds on a series of Code with Claude projects that Anthropic's Claude account showed on X. It describes Claude Desktop Buddy, Anthropic's open-source example for its Bluetooth API: a pixel creature on the M5StickC Plus changes state while Claude works, and the board's buttons approve or cancel a permission request without a trip back to the computer.

Espressif's ESP Desktop Buddy library adds examples and a framework for building such devices. The post says M5Stack's Core, Stick, Atom, Cardputer and Paper lines also suit Claude Buddy projects. Espressif, which makes the ESP32, reads Anthropic's repeated choice of ESP32-based M5Stack hardware as a sign of both brands' reach. The post quotes developer comments without naming the developers.
