Claude Code ports a BBC Micro emulator to the Adafruit Fruit Jam

Andrew de Quincey had Claude Code port the Frank Micro BBC Micro emulator to the RP2350-based Adafruit Fruit Jam. Claude studied the codebase, planned around clock and PIO conflicts and wrote a script for the audio codec registers. Photos show the emulator booted over HDMI. It ran Exile, and an odd Mac keyboard was the only snag.

Briefing

Claude Code read the repository and wrote an investigation document, a CLAUDE.md and a porting plan. The first plan replaced the whole video system. After studying the Fruit Jam ports of Picomac and Doom, Claude judged the clock and USB/PIO conflicts manageable and took a simpler route. For the TLV320DAC3100 audio codec it wrote a Python script that computes the register values, so they can be checked and reproduced.

The firmware took a couple of hours. The PIO video still skips 16 lines and MODE 0 looks poor; an HSTX video path, covered in a follow-up post, works with minor issues.

De Quincey kept a HANDOFF file for project history, with one branch for research and a clean one for the upstream pull request.

“I seriously didn’t expect it to work first time.”
