Claude revives a bricked Kawai CA49 piano by writing a Bluetooth firmware flasher

A Hacker News commenter says Claude revived a Kawai CA49 digital piano bricked by the wrong update file. Claude decompiled Kawai's Android app, found the hardcoded firmware key, decrypted the update and wrote a script that reflashed the piano over Bluetooth from a laptop. The commenter says it took about an hour and shares no code or logs.

Briefing

The commenter flashed the wrong file during an update, then bricked the piano while trying to fix it. Over-the-air updates from Kawai's phone app no longer worked. Before turning to the app, Claude checked whether the piano showed any signs of life.

The account is a reply in the "Ask HN: What was your 'oh shit' moment with GenAI?" thread, posted on 6 June 2026. It is first-hand text with no photos of the piano.

“My piano was back to working within an hour.”
