Iluvatar Labs' research agent routes AgentPad13, a $35 Codex Micro clone

Iluvatar Labs had its research agent, Marvin, route AgentPad13, a two-layer RP2040 macropad modeled on OpenAI's Codex Micro. Marvin reached zero unrouted connections and zero DRC errors; FreeRouting and Quilter had left 18 and 19 unrouted. It also built and simulated the QMK firmware. Photos show the lit prototype.

Briefing

AgentPad13 has 13 hot-swap keys, an encoder, a joystick, capacitive touch and per-key RGB. Marvin treated routing as an experiment: it read up on routing practice, judged each run against the whole design and settled on routing power early and wide, with corridors reserved for USB and the flash bus.

Before the boards arrived, Marvin simulated the compiled firmware against the switches, encoder, joystick, touch input and all 24 LEDs. Assembled electronics cost about $35 a board, or about $65 with case, keycaps and plate.

The post lists two mistakes. A footprint orientation error turned two underglow LEDs outward, and the case CAD was mirrored. Both are fixed in the next revision.

“Marvin did make one visible hardware mistake: the two lower underglow LEDs point away from the board instead of inward.”
