Programming the Fri3d Camp 2024 badge with Claude Code

David Steeman used Claude Code to reverse-engineer and program the Fri3d Camp 2024 badge, an ESP32-S3 handheld with an LCD. Claude backed up the flash in ROM mode, worked out the OTA boot scheme and wrote a serial upload tool. Steeman says the app launcher and name badge it built ran on the device. The photos show only the hardware.

First-hand write-up with step-by-step detail; photos show the badge front and back but not the apps running.

Briefing

Claude Code first cloned and read the open-source badge repositories. The full flash backup ran over the badge's native USB-Serial/JTAG port. Claude fell back to ROM mode, reading 2 MiB chunks, because the stub flasher dropped packets on large reads. Uploads go through a paste-mode runner that resets the badge and captures the serial log.

The post lists the gotchas. OTA anti-rollback reverts a new app unless it is marked valid, MicroPython caches modules until reset, boot logs go to UART0 rather than USB, and a blocking sleep freezes the lvgl display loop. The companion repo holds the apps, the upload tool, a hardware test script and a pinout reference.
