Christian Schaller uses Claude Code to reverse engineer a film scanner and a laptop camera

Christian Schaller had Claude Code write a SANE backend for a Plustek OpticFilm 8200i scanner from USB captures of its Windows driver in a VM. He then reused the method to fix the kernel driver and libcamera for the IMX471 camera in his ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The post shows scans and before-and-after camera frames.

Briefing

The method: run the vendor's Windows driver in a KVM virtual machine with the device passed through, record the bus with usbmon on the Linux host, repeat the operation with the new Linux driver and diff the two traces. For devices with no bus to tap, such as the MIPI camera, the agent reads INF files, registry data and ACPI tables instead.

Upstream SANE added the same scanner in September. Schaller reports his backend is faster at full resolution, 34.6 s against 54.4 s, from a single test. On the camera, low-light frame brightness rose from 31.1 to 90.9, and blue is still about 17% short. hw-harness is a generalized version of his scripts, not the code he used.

“Real hardware is the only judge.”
