An AI agent on a Nokia 110 4G, built by reverse engineering its firmware with Codex

Anup Ray reverse-engineered a Nokia 110 4G's firmware with OpenAI Codex and rewrote its Calculator app as an agent chat app. It sends messages to DeepSeek over the phone's SIM data and can check the battery, toggle the torch, place calls and set alarms. It loads into RAM from a computer, so a restart removes it.

Briefing

Ray worked in phases: AI search inside Opera Mini, then custom code in RAM through the Calculator entry point, answers over SIM data, a usable chat layout and finally tool calls. Running from the Calculator entry point avoids flashing modified firmware. With 48 MB of memory on the phone, the agent is a small custom one with smaller builds, compressed payloads and reused buffers.

A color change once caused restarts, which Ray traced to a write to the wrong style field. Permanent installation is still unsolved. The source code is not released because, the README says, sensitive data is spread through the project. The README does not name the chipset or the tools used to study the firmware.
