Codex builds an LVGL speedometer dashboard on a bare LilyGo T-Display S3

Craig Hollabaugh had Codex identify a blank LilyGo T-Display S3, install the toolchain and write a display test in an unedited session. When the screen stayed dark, the agent found the panel is an ST7789 on an 8-bit parallel bus and rewrote its driver. It then built an LVGL 9.2 speedometer and tachometer dashboard, on camera throughout.

Briefing

Codex ran in the OpenAI desktop app with GPT-5.5 at medium effort. Its first attempt was a low-level SPI hello-world sketch. After the display fix, the 32-minute session moves through rendering artifacts, a value-scaling bug, rotating the display and splitting the sketch into .ino, .cpp and .h files.

Hollabaugh also uses the agent as a tutor, for example to pin the display task to the ESP32-S3's second core with FreeRTOS mutexes and queues. He says he wrote none of the code himself.
