Jacob Beningo: agentic Zephyr development with build, flash and fix loops

Jacob Beningo gave Claude Code his Zephyr skills and a serial-port MCP server, then had it debug a sensor application on an NXP FRDM-MCXA156. The agent first blamed the hardware, and Beningo found the Click board mounted backward. Claude then traced readings of -45 C and 0% humidity to a conversion-timing bug. A screenshot shows its 83-sample check.

Briefing

The application came from a plain request: read the HDC3021 on a MIKROE Temp&Hum 24 Click once per second. Beningo built and flashed it himself, and the serial console showed I2C timeouts. He then gave Claude Code the build, flash and serial tools and asked for a fix, a check on the hardware and a ROOT_CAUSE_ANALYSIS.md.

With the board reseated, the agent found that the driver read the sensor before its conversion finished. Its fix waits 20 ms between requests, retries up to 10 times and rejects the -45.00 and 0.00 pattern.

Beningo's advice: start with one skill, one automated tool and one closed loop, not the whole firmware process.

“The interesting part isn’t whether the agent got the answer right on its first attempt.”
