OpenMicroKbd: an agent-written CoHDL schematic becomes a working Codex Micro-style macropad

Tony Huang built OpenMicroKbd, an open recreation of OpenAI's Codex Micro macropad on an STM32F072, whose schematic an AI agent wrote in CoHDL. Quilter.ai did the layout, an agent helped with the Rust firmware, and Huang had the boards fabbed and finished the assembly by hand. The launch post has photos of the assembled board and printed case.

Briefing

The schematic is CoHDL source. The compiler checks units, pin obligations and power-integrity rules before it writes the netlist, BOM, footprints and the firmware pin map. The repository holds the source and every output, plus the routed KiCad board, fab files, Rust and Embassy firmware and a printable case. One assembled board cost about $37 in the post's prototype quote.

Huang writes that the agent did not produce a finished system from one prompt. Pin choices, parts, layout, soldering and bring-up all needed review and debugging. CoHDL is made by conol.ai, which also publishes the repository.

“It did not produce a finished system from one prompt.”
