wfb-link: Codex brings up an RTL8812AU Wi-Fi adapter from macOS userspace

A software engineer had Codex with GPT-5.5 write most of wfb-link, a Rust stack that drives an ALFA AWUS036ACH Wi-Fi adapter from macOS userspace. Claude Opus 4.7 helped at times. The stack initializes the RTL8812AU and sends and receives WFB-NG frames, with a Raspberry Pi 5 at the far end. The Show HN post says the alpha took two weeks.

Briefing

macOS does not expose the monitor-mode and packet-injection path that WiFiBroadcast links normally use, so wfb-link drives the adapter directly as a USB peripheral. It downloads the RTL8812AU firmware, sets up the MAC, baseband, RF and channel, then sends raw 802.11 frames over bulk OUT and reads them over bulk IN. The frames are bridged to WFB-NG's UDP distributor and aggregator protocols, and a utun helper provides an IP link.

The author writes that it is still alpha: long-range RF quality and calibration are unfinished, though some short-range profiles look good. On macOS 26 it uses IOUSBHost because libusb is unreliable there. Linux users should keep native WFB-NG in monitor mode, and Android over USB-OTG is next.

“Codex GPT 5.5 has done the lion-share of the work here”
