Gemini CLI and Claude Code in mechatronics: a guest lecture with Teensy demos

Parsa Ghasemi published the slides and demo prompts from a guest lecture to mechanical engineering students at Cal Poly Pomona. It covers installing Gemini CLI and Claude Code, writing prompts for runnable embedded code and catching wrong pins, invented library calls and unit errors. The live demo codes a PID position controller for a Teensy 4.1. We found no recording.

Briefing

The demo script builds the controller in steps from an empty folder: spin the motor with 20 kHz PWM, read the encoder, accept a setpoint over serial, then add a PID loop with the PID_v1 library. Each step has a loose prompt and a detailed fallback with exact values, such as gains of Kp 7.0, Ki 2.0 and Kd 1.75 at a 20 ms sample time. The agent compiles and uploads with arduino-cli.

The preparation checklist includes a backup video of each demo and running the laptop on battery to avoid ground loops. If live coding fails, the presenter flashes PWMTest.ino, a known-working sketch kept in the repo. Hand tracking with MediaPipe and voice control with Whisper reuse the same firmware.
