servomotor-mcp: Claude Code drives Gearotons M17 RS-485 servomotors

Gearotons' servomotor-mcp drives its M17 closed-loop NEMA-17 servomotors over RS-485 from Claude Code. It auto-detects motors on the bus, wraps each of the 48 firmware commands as a tool and adds high-level moves; a mock backend runs without hardware. A terminal recording and a 50-second video show Claude Code turning a bench M17 and reading its encoder.

Briefing

The server reads the Gearotons servomotor library's command catalog and generates one tool per firmware command, so new library commands appear without server changes. It lists serial ports, opens the chosen one at 230400 baud and finds every motor on the RS-485 bus by unique ID and alias; a re-scan reboots the motors. Moves take degrees and seconds, which the server converts to firmware units.

Tool calls reach the motor with no software clamping, so full multi-turn travel at any speed is possible. The motor firmware's over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature protections still apply. The README reports the command set verified on an M17 running firmware 0.15.3.0 with four USB adapters. The 50-second video was recorded on 9 September 2026, after this entry's June date.
