Tal Raviv has Claude drive a SunFounder PiCar-X around his house

Tal Raviv connected Claude to a SunFounder PiCar-X through a terminal on its Raspberry Pi, with camera photos as feedback. The robot saved notes, learned gentler turns and a three-point turn, and spent about 15 minutes parking at a filing cabinet instead of 20 cm from the door. The post embeds an edited demo video.

Briefing

The agent harness runs on Raviv's laptop, not on the robot. It reaches the Raspberry Pi on the car over a terminal, sends motion commands as text and gets camera photos and ultrasonic readings back. Raviv compares it with computer use, where Claude works from screenshots and clicks. Through Claude Desktop the robot also had his calendar and email.

Spatial reasoning was the weak point. A fast 360-degree scan swung past the door without a photo of it, turns overshot, and the robot learned not to trust the ultrasonic sensor near feet. It stored what worked as text files and reused it later the same day. Raviv says he cut the video heavily; the robot paused for long stretches between actions.

“It's just tool calls. There just happens to be a robot on the other side.”
