Building robots with Claude: a rover that hit trees, and the fixes that followed

Alice Plante had Claude write the code and choose actions for a SunFounder PiCar-X on a Raspberry Pi 5 and a FrodoBots Earth Rover. The Earth Rover's commands went through a cloud relay while Opus took about ten seconds to answer, and it drove into trees. A small binary on the rover cut command latency to under 10 ms.

Briefing

Both robots run the same code in four tiers. Local reflexes with no AI stop the motors when something is close to the front sensor and send the robot home on low battery, ten times a second. Claude Sonnet makes most driving decisions from text or a camera frame, and Opus handles planning and conversation. Each session's memories go into a Supabase database.

Plante also had the rover stop when YOLO and Depth Anything saw her raise a hand. It worked, but not reliably enough to be the main safety mechanism; a text message saying stop was more reliable. Her write-up has photos but no video or logs of the incidents.
