A Wired reporter gives his OpenClaw agent a LeRobot SO-101 arm

Wired's Will Knight connected OpenClaw and Codex to a LeRobot SO-101 arm with a camera. Codex configured the connections, helped calibrate the joints and wrote a script that grips a red ball the camera sees. OpenClaw then guided training of a control model, checking its error rate after each run. The article's clips show the arm at work.

Briefing

Knight started from a prebuilt LeRobot kit: a leader arm and a follower arm with a camera. Setting it up by hand took him hours, and wrong settings nearly overheated the motors before the agents took over. After OpenClaw's training runs, he writes, the arm picked up objects. Another clip shows a wave the agent came up with.

Wired calls the arm "LeRobot 101". The article, published 20 May 2026, also covers Ken Goldberg's CaP-X benchmark for robot programming, which ranked Gemini above Claude and ChatGPT.

“I recently gave my OpenClaw a real robot arm to play with.”
