Give your agent a scope

MCP servers and builds in which an agent sets up a bench instrument and reads back what it measured, instead of guessing from the code. Start with the Analog Discovery 2 walkthrough to see how a server is put together, then pick a server for the scope, analyzer or supply you own. The last 4 entries show agents checking their own work with measurements. Entries marked Claimed have not shown a capture yet.

1 of 12A step-by-step walkthrough of wrapping an instrument SDK as MCP tools. Read it for the warning about returning too many samples in one call, which applies to every server below.

Building an MCP server for the Analog Discovery 2

Ari Mahpour shows how he wrapped Digilent's WaveForms SDK in a FastMCP server to control an Analog Discovery 2 from an IDE. The article's figures show MCP tool calls capturing a waveform and generating a signal. A 3.3 V sine request came out at 6.6 V peak-to-peak, and he saves large captures to files rather than returning them.

2 of 12A Rigol DS1000Z server that checks each request before it reaches the scope and returns measurements or screenshots. The README shows an agent-configured four-channel capture, and it can diff edges against an RTL simulation.

oscilloscope-mcp: an agent sets up a Rigol DS1104Z and checks hardware against RTL simulation

oscilloscope-mcp connects Claude Code, Cursor or a custom agent to a Rigol DS1000Z oscilloscope over LAN SCPI. A profile lists the series' 15 trigger types and about 95 parameters, and the server checks requests against it before sending. A compare tool diffs captured edges against an RTL simulation. The README shows an agent-configured four-channel capture on a DS1104Z.

mcp-strumentazione: Claude drives a Tektronix scope and an HP GPIB bench over MCP

mcp-strumentazione connects Claude to a Tektronix TBS2204B oscilloscope over LXI and to an HP GPIB bench through 2 MCP servers. The bench server drives a 6632A supply, 6060B electronic load, 5334B counter and 3457A meter. The README includes measurements Claude took through them, among them a mains waveform and a lamp I-V sweep.

4 of 12Its tools flag clipping, missed triggers and poor timebases, and the agent then fixes its setup and captures again. The author describes tests on a DS1054Z but shows no captures.

mcp-hardware-tools: Claude judges its own scope captures and fixes the setup

mcp-hardware-tools connects Claude to a Rigol DS1054Z oscilloscope and decodes SPI, I2C and UART from raw waveforms. Each capture comes back with clipping and trigger-status flags, and the agent adjusts the setup and captures again. The author reports bench tests against known signals from a JDS6600 generator and a Pico 2, and no use yet on an unknown fault.

5 of 12If you own a Saleae Logic 8 or Logic Pro, this uses the Logic 2 automation API to capture and export. Logic 2 must be running with its scripting socket on. We have not seen captures.

Logic Analyzer AI MCP: Saleae Logic 2 for Claude

Logic Analyzer AI MCP connects Claude and other MCP clients to a Saleae logic analyzer through the Logic 2 automation API. Its 11 tools configure a Logic 8 or Logic Pro, run captures, add protocol decoders and export the data as CSV. Logic 2 must be running with its scripting socket enabled. The README shows no captures.

Digilent WaveForms MCP server for Analog Discovery

dwf-mcp-server exposes Digilent WaveForms devices such as the Analog Discovery 2 and 3 to an agent as MCP tools, built on the dwfpy bindings. Tools cover the oscilloscope, logic analyzer, waveform generator, power supply, GPIO and SPI. It ships as a Docker image without Digilent's proprietary runtime, which users add in a derived image. The README shows no hardware runs.

7 of 12Keysight's first-party server: 18 tools over VISA, with every SCPI command previewed in plain language for an engineer to approve. Version 0.1 for Windows, and a mock mode works without hardware.

    NewsBB-0032helpfiles.keysight.com

Keysight releases an MCP server for instrument control with engineer approval

Keysight has released version 0.1 of its MCP Server for Instrument Control as a Windows executable. The release notes list 18 tools that discover VISA instruments, resolve SCPI commands from each instrument's definition file and run them. An engineer approves a plain-language preview of every command before it reaches hardware. Sessions are logged, and a simulation mode needs no instruments.

8 of 12Read this before you connect an agent to a power supply. Limits come from a file a person signs off, and a small function refuses anything outside them. The demo runs on simulated instruments.

bench-mcp: SCPI instrument control for agents behind interlocks they cannot override

bench-mcp exposes SCPI power supplies, multimeters and oscilloscopes to an agent through 10 MCP tools, with no tool that sends raw SCPI. Voltage and current limits come from a file a person signs off, read once at start-up and enforced by a pure function before every command. The README says it has run only against simulated instruments.

9 of 12For meters with no interface at all: the agent reads a multimeter through a webcam, and only while a red window shows the camera is on. The demo shows it reading 4.96 V from a meter.

camclave captures single still frames from a webcam for Claude Code or Codex, and only while a red on-screen window shows the camera is on. The agent can read a multimeter, check whether an LED is lit or watch a 3D print's first layer. Stopping the session deletes the captures. The 17-second demo shows the agent reading 4.96 V DC.

Active-Pro MCP server: Claude Code analyzes a three-FPGA boot capture

Active Firmware Tools connected Claude Code to its Active-Pro logic analyzer and firmware debugger through an MCP server over TCP. In the two-minute video the agent triggers a capture on a custom board with three FPGAs running RISC-V soft cores. It reads firmware trace output alongside RGMII, USB enumeration and SCSI traffic and checks it for errors.

11 of 12Claude Code simulates an RC filter, programs a microcontroller and compares the LeCroy traces with the simulation. Note the author's warning: the agent cannot see the bench, so give it the pinout.

Claude Code checks a SPICE simulation against a LeCroy scope on a real circuit

Lucas Gerads connected Claude Code to his LeCroy oscilloscope through lecroy-mcp and to ngspice through spicelib-mcp. In the post's 12-minute video, Claude simulates an RC low-pass filter, programs an ATtiny1614 to drive it and compares the scope traces with the simulation. Gerads warns that Claude cannot see the bench and needs an explicit pinout.

12 of 12One prompt takes Claude Code from filter coefficients to a programmed Cmod S7. It then sweeps 1, 5 and 15 kHz through scope and generator MCP servers to confirm the cutoff.

    BuildBB-0157youtube.comBuild of the week

Claude Code designs, builds and scope-tests an FPGA low-pass filter from one prompt

In an Octopart video, one prompt sends Claude Code through a digital low-pass filter on a Digilent Cmod S7 FPGA board. It writes and simulates the filter, then programs the board over JTAG. Through MCP servers for an Analog Discovery 2 and a Rigol scope, it sweeps test tones at 1, 5 and 15 kHz against the 10 kHz cutoff.
